December has come upon us and a new year is right around the corner. Everyone has their own traditions for the holidays which are likely to keep you busy. But that doesn’t excuse the need for new entertainment in this final month of the year. While there is certainly a fair share of big releases (Star Wars: The Last Jedi being the proverbial cherry on top), there are certain releases you should keep an eye on. These are my picks for December 2017:
Syfy – December 6
Syfy doesn’t get the attention it sometimes deserves due to the genre specific content. However, Syfy has done an excellent job of expanding the audience that its shows reach. Happy! is a wonderful example of that expansion. Based on the comic book of the same name, Happy! follows the story of an ex-cop turned hit man who lives his life in a haze of booze and drugs. One night after being left for dead, an imaginary, blue-winged horse named Happy asks for his help. What follows is sure to include hilarious insanity and extensive violence. It is certainly not for children, but definitely worth a watch.
There have been few talents are truly remarkable as that of Daniel Day-Lewis. The 3-time Best Actor Winner has proven time and again that he one of the best actors of his generation. Now that he has announced his retirement, the need to see his next and final film becomes even more necessary. Phantom Thread pairs the actor once again with writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson to tell the tale of a renowned dressmaker in 1950s London. He soon falls in love, and with that love, the perfectly tailored world he created begins to become undone. The film is certain to be dramatic and allow the actors to engage the audience with their every move, something we will never get to see from Day-Lewis again.
Xbox One – December 12
Video games can often be a series of trends, and there is no bigger trend then that of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (or PUBG for short). What started out as a mod to ARMA 2 soon became one of the most popular online shooters on the PC. The game sets up a large amount of players on a single map, and these players must scavenge, build, and fight to be the last player standing. With the massive success of the game on PC, the expansion to Xbox One should prove to be an opportunity to expand on an already devoted fan base. If you have yet to experience the engaging of PUBG, you need to check it out.
